Public sector union Unison has warned that up to 1,000 jobs will be lost at Suffolk CC if it is abolished in favour of four new unitary authorities, the East Anglia Daily Times reported (16 July, p12).

Labour leader Chris Mole agrees with the union's figure but believes job cuts will be more severely felt at Suffolk's district councils.

However, they all agree that if there are to be job cuts most will be made at either senior or middle management levels rather than front-line staff losing their jobs.
