Sunderland City Council has introduced a scheme to put tenants on a one-year probation, reported the Newcastle Journal (23 April, p12).

Manchester City was the first council to introduce the trial periods for tenants in February, after legislative changes allowed councils to offer introductory tenancies. Local authorities in Wales are considering similar schemes following government and police recommendations.

Sunderland councillors hope the measure will help target anti-social behaviour on housing estates and allow it to use tougher powers under last year's Housing Act.

The scheme will be implemented in September.
