Health secretary Frank Dobson has welcomed the launch of Camden and Islington Area Child Protection Committees' document Policy, Procedure and Guidance for Working with Drug & Alcohol Misusing Parents. Speaking at the launch at the National Hospital in north London, he said:

'This initiative demonstrates how effectively two local authorities

can work together. Camden & Islington's guidance is potentially a

very effective tool in supporting families where parents are misusing

drugs or alcohol.

'This is a sensitive area and to support these families effectively a

wide range of services need to work together. Health authority

alcohol and drug services, maternity and mental health services and

local authority adult and children's services should be involved.

These services must work with any other group who may come across

parents misusing drugs and alcohol such as schools, youth workers and

the criminal justice system.

'Bringing all these groups together to help support families of drug

and alcohol misusing parents is not an easy task. This guidance will

try to improve the way the services work and as a result, families in

Camden and Islington should receive better treatment.'
