Peter Bottomley, Conservative MP for Eltham, asked the secretary of state for education and employment for the numbers and percentages of surplus places in each local education authority in England (WA 27 Jan col 99, Hansard).

Figures showed that there were just over 815,000 surplus school places in January 1996 - 10% of the total capacity of 7,6 million places - which represents a reduction of just under 68,000 places between 1995 and 1996.
