Epsom and Ewell BC, Surrey, has hit out at the high costs of Surrey CC's central computer system, which they say is one of the highest for a county council in England.

They also believe that a large part of the cost of transferring to the proposed unitary system is a result of the large computer expenses, coupled with the county's plans to move premises.

Ron Gee, chairman of Epsom and Ewell's policy and resources committee, said: 'If the Commission's preference for five unitary councils in Surrey is confirmed, the high cost of County Hall, and of the County Council's expensive computer systems, will be eliminated.

'Whilst it will not be possible to set aside these costs immediately following the County Council's abolition, these issues will have top priority, within a new unitary authority, in order to benefit our council tax payers.'
