A former fire fighter has lost a case against Surrey CC in the court of appeal over damages awarded to him as a result of an injury at work, reports the Independent (Review, p7).

Judges ruled that£49,197.20 in benefits paid to the plaintiff over a five-year period and included in the total amount of damages awarded of£224,049.81 should be deducted before calculating interest. Had they been included the plaintiff's award would have increased by about an extra£10,000.
