Two mothers who left their seven children at home when they went on holiday will not be prosecuted, reports the Independent (p2 August 28).

Surrey social services and police issued a joint statement on Friday, saying a criminal investigation had revealed no evidence to take proceedings.

Surrey social services placed the children, aged between 10 months and 14 years, in foster homes on Monday. They are likely to remain in care for the time being, but the joint investigation into their care will continue until next week, said the statement.

The women, who live together with the children in Dorking, Surrey, returned home on Wednesday, when they were questioned by police and social workers. They had no comment to make, reports the Independent.
