Surrey CC's in-house highways consultancy team has beaten off competition from two leading firms to land a four-year deal with the county.

The contract to provide highways and transportation professional services is worth around£3.5 million a year and is extendible for a further three years. The in-house team, Environment Consultancy Division, saw off both Mott MacDonald and WS Atkins.

Consultant PricewaterhouseCoopers oversaw the selection process and said the council had ensured that all the bidders had full and detailed information before choosing the 120-strong ECD team.

In the light of Mott MacDonald's submission, Surrey has agreed to explore joint working in the area of highways and materials testing.

Daniel Kee, chairman of Surrey's transportation sub-committee, said: 'This is great news for ECD, for Surrey CC and for local government as a whole. Our in-house team has shown that local government professionals can compete against the best in the UK and win.'

ECD head Trevor Urwin said: 'We are very proud of our in-house team. Their professionalism and our use of best practices from both the public and the private sectors led to our success.'
