Anchor Trust and Surrey CC have signed a contract for the transfer of 17 of the council's care homes for the elderly.

The private finance initiative deal has gained approval from the Department of Health for a£29 million refurbishing and rebuilding programme. Annual turnover on the 25-year contract is expected to be in excess of£10m.

More than 800 elderly people live in the homes involved and the deal will create nearly 250 new jobs.

Anchor chief executive John Belcher said: 'This ground-breaking agreement is a massive investment in improving the quality of life for older people and will serve as a model for improving services.'

Surrey social services director Brian Parrott said: 'The scale of this PFI transfer makes it a first nationally for local social services and is the product of painstaking preparation and consultation.'
