Doncaster MBC chief executive Doug Hale was shocked to learn of his suspension (see LGCNet, 1 May) and is taking advice from the Association of Local Authority Chief Executives, reports The Guardian (p6).

Mr Hale was suspended pending the results of the inquiry into fraud and overspending on trips by some members. The former leader and deputy leader resigned in the wake of the revelations.

Mr Hale has been suspended for a maximum of two months, on full pay and Doncaster education director Alf Taylor has been appointed acting chief executive.

Council leader Malcolm Glover has refused to give reasons for the suspension, but it was decided the internal inquiry into the affair should cover management as well as members.
