A Swindon council is to double its budget for its 'rent deposit scheme' which provides homeless families with the deposit necessary to secure private rented homes.

The scheme, introduced in January last year with a budget of £10,000, helped 36 families find permanent accommodation. Thamesdown BC has now cleared a further 10,000 towards the scheme.

Since the scheme was introduced, Thamesdown has cut the number of homeless families in bed and breakfast accommodation from 117 to nine.
