A telephone hotline for people who want the latest advice and information on compost is to be established by Torfaen CBC. The scheme is part of the council's commitment to reducing the quality of domestic waste which it has to deal with.

David Lloyd, chair of the environmental management committee and campaigner on a range of environmental issues commented:

'The council currently has to dispose of over 49,000 tonnes of household waste each year and much of this is reyclable. By using compostable waste in their own gardens, householders can save themselves and their community money and help protect their environment.

'That is why Torfaen CBC, like a number of other councils is looking at ways in which it migh encourage people to compost as much of their domestic waste as possible. The consumer has the power to choose products with less packaging and to find ways to reuse and recycle wherever they can.'
