The Countryside Commission's designation of the Tamar Valley as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was approved today by environment minister Earl Ferrers.

The designation covers an area of 196 square kilometres straddling the Devon and Cornwall border encompassing the river valleys and estuaries of the Tamar, Tavy and Lynher.

The Tamar Valley is important for its combination of unspoilt valleys, woodlands and estuaries which provide a rich and varied water landscape and for its special concentration of wildlife and heritage features of national importance.

The Tamar Valley is the last AONB in the commission's designation programme.

- The main aim of an AONB is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of distinctive landscapes. Local authorities, landowners, residents and conservationists are encouraged to work in partnership in these special areas to ensure proper land management schemes and specific development control policies are successfully implemented.
