Health secretary Stephen Dorrell has given health authorities three months to improve the care of mentally ill patients in the community.

The move came last week as two reports, from the Clinical Standards Advisory Group and the Social Services Inspectorate, highlighted shortcomings in care provision.

'Urgent work is needed to deliver good mental health services across the country,' health minister Gerald Malone said in a letter to health authorities.

- Scope, formerly the Spastics Society, said last week that disabled people and carers are having to fight for services, support and equipment. 'Community care has forced many to rely on family and friends,' it claimed.
