Ron Davies, the former Welsh secretary, has stepped down as the official Labour candidate for the new Welsh assembly, reports the Financial Times (p8).

His decision follows a meeting with Tony Blair yesterday morning.

Mr Davies resigned as Welsh secretary on Tuesday after admitting to a 'serious lapse of judgment' that involved him being robbed at knifepoint after meeting a stranger on Clapham Common. He is determined, however, to continue as MP for Caerphilly in south Wales.

A fifth person was arrested yesterday in connection with the incident.
