The conflicting pressures created by the regulatory demands of

business, consumers and environmentalists will be highlighted in the

1998/9 Annual Report from the Better Regulation Task Force.

The report will examine the regulatory challenges for government,

particularly in the light of their effect on economic activity and

competitiveness, and urge a greater awareness of the alternatives to

regulation.

Task force chairman Lord Haskins will launch the report today. He

will also outline the task force's work programme for

the forthcoming year, which will include targeting redundant

regulation, scrutinising proposed legislation and new areas for

review.
