Day-trippers visiting Britain should be taxed because they are costing the country money, claims the Earl of Bradford in his foreword to the official handbook of Britain, reports The Times (p4).

Writing in a personal capacity, the Earl claims coach trips of tourists coming into the country via ferry and Eurostar, armed with packed lunches and intent on visiting free attractions, cost the taxpayer.

The handbook is published today.
