Massive council tax increases could be forced upon northern and Midland councils if government proposals are ratified, a campaign group has warned.

The Northern Alliance Group of County Councils has hit out at the resource equalisation proposal put forward in the funding formula consultation paper.

The group claims that if it is introduced its members may have to put up council tax by 10%. Hertfordshire CC, the worst

affected county, would be hit by a rise

of 30%.

Dave Wilcox (Lab), group chair, said that if the government did not act money would be siphoned off to more affluent areas.
