The Times (p1) reports that education secretary Gillian Shephard has put forward plans to sack teachers over their pupils' poor results.

Ms Shephard told a news conference yesterday that her system of appraising teachers would be 'given teeth' so that the worst could be removed from the classroom.

John Major also announced that the 20 lowest performing education authorities would be inspected and if they failed, 'hit squads' would take over.

Authorities targeted are: Calderdale, Islington, Lambeth, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Haringey, Greenwich and Lewisham LBCs as well as Kingston upon Hull, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sandwell, Middlesbrough, Manchester, Barnsley, Bradford, Salford and Wolverhampton.
