Senior teachers in the Perth and Kinross area are being offered a legal hotline in response to parents' increased awareness of their legal rights and new responsibilities for schools under the Children's Act, the Scotsman reports(p10).

The move, thought to be the first by a local Scottish authority, has been taken after controversy arose earlier this year when two sets of parents removed their children from Blaringone Primary in Perthshire and a head teacher faced allegations of which she was later cleared.

The council's legal manager Lorna McGregor said teachers' responsibilities were changing as people became more aware of their ability to seek recourse in the law.
