Teachers have dismissed new guidelines from the Department for Education which urge them to take responsibility for children's safety on adventure holidays, overruling instructors if necessary, the Guardian reports (14 May, p6).

Dough McAvoy, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), said teachers did not have the resources to inspect between 1,500 and 2,500 outdoor centres in Britain and called on the government to introduce a proper registration and regulation system for outdoor centres.
