Unions have warned headteachers in Bedfordshire to give 143 teachers back pay totalling a third of a million pounds or face the consequences, reports BBC Three Counties.

The teachers are owed the money after an assessment exercise.

National Union of Teachers official Glenn Williams said in many cases the schools could not afford to make the payments and Bedfordshire CC local education authority could not pay because of local management of schools regulations.

Mr Williams said headteachers were considering whether to persuade the teachers to accept phasing in of their pay increases.

But he said: 'This is not on. It is not acceptable to the teaching unions. This money should be found form somewhere and paid to the teachers as soon as possible.

'Any teahcer who comes under pressure from a head about these payments will find themselves supported and the school will find itself in severe difficulties.'
