Local government education leaders have today expressed their sympathy over

news that Eamonn O'Kane, general secretary for the National Association of

Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers has passed away after a long

illness.

Graham Lane, chair of the LGA's education and lifelong learning

executive said: 'We are all saddened to hear that Eamonn has died. I know

that his friends and colleagues in NASUWT will miss him greatly, and so too

will those of us that have had the pleasure to work with him in the past.

'Eamonn's commitment to raising educational standards was second to none and

his dedication to workforce reforms is a sign of a true professional who

will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

'Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time.'
