Commenting on the ODPM's publication today of a discussion pamphlet*, aimed

at canvassing opinion on the future of local government over the next ten

years, Liberal Democrat local government spokesman Edward Davey said:

'It's surprising this pamphlet was not published before the local elections,

to enable the public to be involved in the debate.

'Labour's 'Whitehall-knows-best-policy', desperately needs changing.

'After seven years in power, Labour has failed to roll back Conservative

centralisation.

'We need fairer local taxes and stronger accountable local government.

'Let's hope this pamphlet delivers on its promises, unlike its many

predecessors.'
