Essex campaigners against bull bars on vehicles - including Tendring DC - will today launch a new initiative to coincide with a call in the house of commons for them to be banned, reports BBC Essex.

Paul Flynn, Labour MP for Newport West, is introducing a Bill to call for the fitting of the accessories to be made illegal.

Today's initiative is the culmination of a campaign calling for the fitting of the bars on cars and jeeps to be outlawed. Campaigners says the metal bars cause more severe injuries to third parties involved in crashes.

Before the Bill is introduced, Tendring DC is launching its own campaign. At a press conference the chairman of the council's control and public protection committee will help in the removal of bull bars from a car.

At least one local garage has agreed not to fit them and one is offering remove bull bars free of charge.

Research by the Department of Transport says the bars could be responsible for up to 35 deaths a year.
