Teresa Gorman MP has hit back over claims that she made nearly £1m from a council house property deal, reports the Daily Mail (15 January, p5).

Ms Gorman paid £30,000 for the lease of two adjoining four-storey terraced town houses in Lord North Street, in the mid-1970's. Five years later she bought the freehold from the Westminster council for a further £25,000, the paper reports.

Six months ago one house was sold for £445,000 and the other is reportedly worth about £500,000.

Ms Gorman, MP for Billericay, said she had spent a lot of time and money on restoring the house and dismissed the story as 'a scandalous distortion of the facts,' the Daily Mail reports.
