The Transport & General Workers' Union is set to merge with Amicus after T&G conference delegates voted in favour of the move.

The merger will make the union the UK's largest, with around two million members.

A ballot of all members of both unions will be held in February. If they agree the new union, as yet un-named, would be launched on 1 May.

T&G general secretary Tony Woodley said the merger was about 'working class unity'.

'A growing union, really investing in organising, will give more power to the elbow of our shopfloor representatives everywhere,' he said.
