West Dorset DC has been accused of taking the idea of shaping Dorset's future to new extremes after the map in its review publicity changed the county's shape. The council wants rural Dorset to be served by two unitaries, West and East Dorset, while the Local Government Commission and Dorset CC prefer one.

In the map on West Dorset's leaflet the county had been substantially stretched, apparently exaggerating the need for two unitaries.

'You have an opportunity to shape the future of local government in Dorset,' it says underneath.

A county spokesman said the leaflet, delivered to his house by a dustman, brought a new meaning to the term junk mail.

Len Paul, corporate services manager at West Dorset, said the change was done for design reasons. 'The county has put forward the idea that this is subliminal advertising. We have not deliberately set out to tinker with the map of Dorset to pursue our objectives,' he said.
