City of Edinburgh recreation convener, Steve Cardownie, has a pressing problem for the authority's taxpayers - he's claiming compensation for a torn pair of trousers.

The Scotsman (p5) reports that Mr Cardownie ripped his trousers on the jagged edge of a desk - rendering his suit unwearable. The council's general purposes committee will today decide if he can be awarded up to£150 compensation for the torn garment.

Council guidelines state that staff members can claim for damage, caused by no fault of their own at work, to personal property including clothes. But the scheme has not so far extended to councillors.
