Education and employment minister James Paice has announced that St Joseph's College, Stoke-on-Trent, will become the third independent school to be accepted into the state sector as a grant-maintained school.

St Joseph's College will become a grant-maintained school from 1st Janauary 1977.

Mr Paice said: 'I would like to welcome St Joseph's to the significant number of schools of all types which have chosen to become GM. I am particularly pleased that another independent school has used the opportunities, under section 49 of the Education Act 1993, of allowing promoters, including those in independent schools, to establish new grant maintained schools.

'Grant-maintained schools are self-governing within the state sector of education. Countrywide their governors and headteachers are now taking decisions about how best to deploy their funds, how to manage the curriculum, whom to employ and what goods and services to purchase.

'Parents recognise and want for their children the advantages which come with self-government. GM schools spend more money where it counts - in the classroom. They achieve good results and are popular with parents.'
