Social Security Secretary Peter Lilley will make a statement on benefits uprating. He will also present the Social Security (Contributions) Bill and the Statutory Sick Pay Bill for their first readings. Transport Secretary John Macgregor will make an announcement on the West Coast Main Line upgrading.

Written government announcements are expected on: a code of practice for private ambulances; and safety of animal feed.

Select committee sitting include: The Welsh Grand Committee on implications of the Budget (10.30am, room 10); Environment Committee hears DoE officials on recycling(9.15am, room 21); and Defence Committee hears from Defence Secretary Malcolm Rifkind on defence spending (10.50am, room 15).

Oral questions at 2.30pm are on environment matters. Main business is the debate on the Budget.

In the House of Lords main business is a five hour 'no confidence' debate on the government's policies.
