Durham CC is asking the government for permission to open

England's first toll road, BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this

morning.

The council wants to charge vehicles£2 to drive along the 100-yard,

city centre street, in an effort to reduce traffic and accidents.

Sue Pitts, leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition on Durham City Council, told the programme: 'It's an historical solution for an historic city. The sooner cars are discouraged, the safer and the better'.

But opponents believe talk of a toll road will deter visitors to the city,

Today reported.
