Regeneration plans for Barnsley, to be unveiled this evening, take their

inspiration from Italian hill towns, BBC Radio Four's Today programme heard

this morning.

Architect Will Alsop said his team had been working with local people to

draw up the scheme. 'Our plan reflects the wishes of the community', he told

Today. He had used the model of an Italian hill town becuase such towns have

'a mixed street life and a vibrancy which makes them a better place to

live', he said.

The plans involve concentrating more housing and businesses in the town

centre, allowing some of the outlying areas of Barnsley to be returned to

countryside.
