Diesel fuelled vehicles should be cleared from city streets, according to a senior Meteorological Office scientist who sits on the department of environment's expert panel on air quality standards, reports The Times (p7).

Richard Derwent said diesel engines produced microscopic flecks of soot increasingly linked with breathing problems and heart attacks.

He will tell a meeting of the National Society for Clean Air tomorrow that more revolutionary thinking is needed to encourage environmentally friendly fuels such as natural gas.
