Immigration minister Mike O'Brien is to discuss today what is to be done about the Czech and Slovak gypsies seeking asylum in the UK, BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this morning.

Kent CC is seeking help from the government to deal with the influx of asylum seekers.

Officials from the Slovakian embassy will meet councillors to discuss the problem, Today reported. The minister is to discuss the issue with the Labour MP for Dover.

The Sunday Telegraph reported (p5) that Kent CC has spent£600,000 on caring for asylum seekers and fears it could be required to spend£2m more.

Mr O'Brien was quoted in the paper saying that anyone seeking to abuse Britain's immigration controls would be dealt with very severely.

The Guardian (p5) meanwhile, reports comments from the Allied Roma Council International that the refugees were genuine asylum seekes fleeing a wave of racism in the Eastern bloc. 'These people are being racially persecuted in East Europe. A lot of them are related, so they leave together. That's why they all came in one weekend.'
