The Financial Times today reports on the shortlisted entries for the competition to design a new pedestrian bridge across the Thames, connecting St Paul's with the new Tate Gallery of Modern Art at Bankside (p11).

The competition, organised by the FT in association with the Corporation of London and Southwark LBC, has attracted some of the best architects and artists in the world. The winner is to be announced in December.

An application for lottery funding has been made to the Millennium Commission. But Michael Cassidy, chairman of the City's policy and finance committee, also suggested that an act of parliament could be enacted to release monies from the City of London Bridge House Charity - a £300m fund that exists for the maintenance of the four Thames bridges in the City - to build the new one.
