Commenting on John Prescott's 'Sustainable Communities: People, Places and Prosperity' documents*, launched yesterday despite growing evidence that his building programme is environmentally unsustainable, Caroline Spelman, shadow secretary of state for local and devolved government said:
'Far from lasting five years, John Prescott's housing plans haven't even lasted five days before falling apart. Like Mr Prescott's discredited Ten Year Transport Plan, this is yet more talk from a Labour government that has raised taxes, but not delivered.
'Labour's language of 'citizen engagement' and 'local leadership' is empty rhetoric. John Prescott's unelected regional assemblies have seized power from local councils and local residents, and are pushing though a swathe of building on green fields across the country, with no democratic mandate or legitimacy.
'Conservatives have pledged to abolish the flawed Communities Plan, scrap his regional house-building targets, shut down the regional assemblies, and let local people have the final say on local developments.'
