A London Evening Standard (p6) analysis of nominations to the forthcoming local elections claims that the Conservatives have written off whole swathes of East London.

Nomination papers show that in Barking and Dagenham the party is fielding only five candidates out of the borough's 51 seats for the 7th May elections.

The paper says that the Tories are also failing to put up a full slate in Havering, Newham, Haringey, Islington and Tower Hamlets.

On page 22, the paper carries a feature on the first major test for post election Labour and Conservative parties in the forthcoming local elections.
