Tory MPs are divided about the likely effect on the May council elections of the allegations of gerrymandering by Westminster LBC, reports the Financial Times (15 January, p4), in one of the many weekend stories about the council.

One Tory MP reportedly fears the Tories will be 'utterly wiped out' in the May elections, recalling that the Conservatives control only one metropolitan council outside London.

No Tory MP questioned the seriousness of the accusations against former Westminster council chairwoman Dame Shirley Porter and her colleagues but several thought the political damage could be contained.
