The Independent (p10) carries a feature on the latest developments in the Conservative Party's selection plans for the official candidate to become Mayor of London. A ballot of the party will be held before names go into the hat. Jeffrey Archer is seen as a clear favourite, but he will have to fight off Chris Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, former transport minister Steven Norris, and Chelsea MP Alan Clark in the primaries.

The one-member, one-vote contest means that grassroots activists can determine the outcome. Conservative Central Office and the leadership will stand aside, not even insisting upon nominations. Anyone who wishes to stand need only be a party member to put his or her name forward.
