The Conservatives have gained control of Bexley LBC in a by-election.

A sweep of the traditionally safe ward of Blendon and Penhill last Thursday, with the eight gains made on 7 May, gave the Tories a majority of two.

The win represents the party's only gain of the 1998 elections in London.

Conservative group leader Michael Slaughter, who is expected to be confirmed as council leader later this month, described the outcome as 'a timely boost for the Conservative Party [which] shows Labour's honeymoon is over in Bexley'.

Voting in the ward had been postponed after a Tory councillor died shortly before the 7 May poll.
