A Conservative government will introduce a new criminal offence of assaulting or attempting to assault teachers, social workers, nurses and other public servants, William Hague will announce this week.

The Sunday Telegraph (p4) reported that the move is designed to trump Labour ministers, who have long talked of the problems of violence faced by workers in the classroom and other public services, but have yet to legislate.

The Tories are also aiming to win votes from the public sector workers, traditionally more inclined towards Labour.

Although attacks on public service workers are already covered by the law of assault, the Conservatives believe that creating a specific offence to protect public servants will have a deterrent effect because of the stigma attached.
