The Guardian (Society, p25) carries a feature on a partnership development fighting poverty and isolation in rural Devon.

The Torridge Funding Opportunities Group aims to identify funding opportunities, co-ordinating efforts, avaoiding duplication of applications and securing inward investment. Membership of the group and newcomers join on a networking basis.

The success of the scheme, says the report, lies in the rural location and the recognition by members of Torridge DC, the consultative committee and the partnership committee, of the need for a flexible approach in such an area.

Ian Hobbs, former district manager of social services, who co-ordinates the network as the county council's local community development and partnership officer, says: 'There's a general sense of energy and personal commitment, a lack of jealousy over boundaries and a focus on doing what works and spending money well.'
