The chairman of Leicestershire CC was driven to leave the Conservative party because of its insensitivity to local issues - according to the authority's Labour leader, reports BBC Leicester.

Ernie White resigned from the Conservative party today over the way it handled the debate over local government reorganisation - and unitary status.

County council Labour spokesman Martyn Wright said this afternoon that he sympathised with Mr White.

He commented: 'I was surprised that it happened at this time, but really he has been at odds with the government over the reorganisation. He never took kindly to the arrogance of the government.

'While we were down there on an all-party delegation, we were literally thrown out of a minister's office after about 10 minutes'.
