Hampshire CC chairman Freddie Emery-Wallis has quit his post after police charged him in connection with alleged sexual abuse of a boy 30 years ago.

Mr Emery-Wallis, Conservative member, denies the allegations but said he would give up the chairmanship until his name is cleared.

He said: 'I am determined to do all I can to ensure these allegations, which I will fight vigorously through the courts, do not tarnish either my reputation, the integrity of the county council or compromise my role as chairman.'

A police spokesman said the alleged offences were 'against one male who at the time was less than 16 years of age'.

Vice-chairman Alan Rice has taken the role of acting chairman.
