A Conservative MP has attacked plans by Bromsgrove DC to try and prevent ecstasy deaths by forcing all licensed premises to give free tap water to customers.

The Birmingham Post reports (p3) that Halesowen and Stoubridge MP Warren Hawkesley said yesterday that the council was encouraging youngsters to take drugs as well as acting illegally.

And John Skelton of the London and South East Licensed Victuallers Association said it was not possible to force premises to give away water and licensees would win any legal action.

'This is typical loony left nonsense - I wouldn't be surprised if they're on drugs themselves,' he said.

But, reports the Post, Bromsgrove's assistant district secretary Vince Harrison said the council could force compliance.

'If the pubs and clubs have public entertainment licenses, which most have, we can make it a condition of the licence and it will be quite easy to enforce.'

He said the council recognised that some people might see it as encouraging youngsters to take drugs, but it was felt that it was more beneficial to let someone who had taken drugs drink water rather than face the very serious consequences.
