Conservative MP Barry Legg wants to give councils extra powers to close nightclubs involved in drug dealing. His private member's Bill follows Wandsworth LBC's long battle to close Club UK, which had been linked to drug deaths and narcotics dealing.
Proposals in the Bill would prevent clubs extending legal proceedings while continuing to operate. Councils would gain the power to suspend licences in light of a police report and evidence of a serious drug problem.
The Bill was welcomed by the Association of London Government. But the Local Government Drugs Forum warned that hastily drafted legislation might be difficult to implement.
Principal officer Noel Towe said: 'If we don't exercise our powers properly there is considerable potential for damages cases on behalf of the clubs.'
