Conservative MP John Townend, has demanded cuts in benefit entitlement to new age travellers, single mothers, 'work shy' dole claimants and unemployed people with large families to pay for tax cuts.

The Daily Telegraph (p8) reports that Mr Townend, who is chairman of the backbench finance committee, wants chancellor Kenneth Clarke to make tax cuts in the next budget to woo voters back to the Tories.

He wrote in the latest edition of Parliamentary Review: 'Why should new age travellers who have no intention of getting permanent work move around the country on benefit?

'Why should unmarried teenage girls have the option of a life on benefit if they get pregnant?'
