The total capital sums the government is allowing for investment in the renovation of local authority housing from all sources in 1996/97 has been supplied to the Commons.

Local government minister David Curry, in a written response to a question from Labour MP Greville Janner (WA 19 Dec col 1098), said the amounts available would comprise:

-- £699m general housing credit approvals

-- £30m from the housing partnership fund

-- £256m from estate action

-- £125m for seventy schemes in round one of the single regeneration budget challenge fund. (Similar details for round two are not yet available), the minister said.

-- £40m from the deprived estates challenge fund out of a three year total of £314m

Mr Curry said the amount available in addition to the above would depend on authorities' success in selling assets.

The proportion of all these resources actually invested in the renovation of council housing would depend on authorities' own decisions about priorities, he added.
