Gerald Kaufman, (Lab, Gorton), asked the government what was the total housing subsidy paid to (a) local authorities in England and Wales and (b) the City of Manchester for (i) the latest 12-month period for which figures are available and (ii) the comparable 12 month period for 1979-80.

Local government minister, Tony Baldry, replied that between 1979-80 £1,333m was paid to local authorities in England and Wales (£30,063,403.00 in Manchester) and £4,229 in 1993-94 (£172,142,731 in Manchester).

A rent rebate subsidy is included in the figures for 1993-94.
